Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron’s installation [Dis]Junction at the Maison de la culture Frontenac reimagines the grid structure of suspended ceiling panels, transforming a ubiquitous architectural feature into a dynamic sculptural form. By duplicating and suspending the typical ceiling panels vertically throughout the space, Abbondanza-Bergeron disrupts the grid’s function, creating an unexpected labyrinth-like arrangement. The work prompts the viewer to reconsider the ordinary material, as art critic Marie-Ève Charron observes: “You will never look at these panels the same way again, so abundant in the architecture of suspended industrial ceilings.” The panels, once hidden in plain sight, now become an active part of the spatial experience.

The installation evokes a range of tensions, both material and symbolic. These include contrasts such as “the black and the white, the full and the empty, the concrete and the virtual, the horizontal and the vertical, the order and the disorder.” The artist’s intervention underscores the mobility and adaptability of the grid, shifting it from a standardized element of functional architecture to a critique of its normative use. In [Dis]Junction, Abbondanza-Bergeron not only alters the material’s position but also challenges the viewer’s relationship to space itself, blurring the lines between form and function.
